Reading
"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." Dr Seuss
At Morton we believe that becoming a proficient and fluent reader is an important key to successful learning. There are two strands to this - developing the skills to be a good reader and developing a love for reading and books so that we want to read and we see the benefit of it.
Early Reading
Teaching the skills of reading starts in Foundation where children learn how to decode words using phonics. At Morton we use the Little Wandle scheme to teach phonics. Children have daily phonics sessions which are followed up with group reading three times a week using books that match the the sounds that they have been learning in class. This book is then taken home along with a 'reading for pleasure' book that they have chosen themselves.
Reading lessons
Children in KS2 have daily reading lessons which focus on vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. Quality texts are chosen to engage and to develop skills and knowledge. Where appropriate, they are linked to themes within other curriculum areas.
Brilliant Books
To develop a love of reading, we have created a list of 100 Brilliant Books for each group. These have been carefully chosen to include a variety of books including fiction, non fiction, poetry, picture books and graphic novels. There is something for everyone! Children can select books from this list to read and take home.
