Our Philosophy

At Morton, we believe that geography should inspire children’s curiosity and fascination about the world that they live in and the diversity of people within it. We aim to develop children’s understanding of physical and human features both locally and globally.

To be a successful geographer, children need a secure understanding of key substantive knowledge as well as the skills that are developed through the element of disciplinary knowledge.

We want our children to grow up to be responsible global citizens who understand how human and environmental factors affect our planet and value the importance of looking after the world.

How we teach Geography

Our geography curriculum has been developed to ensure that it covers all aspects of the National Curriculum. Geography is taught in well planned and sequenced units and where appropriate links are made to other subjects.

We have a two-year curriculum cycle to fit with our mixed age classes. Our Geography units are sequenced in a way that allows children to first learn about where they live before extending their knowledge to the wider world. Each unit provides time to look at maps in order to understand where in the world we are talking about in relation to where we are.

There are opportunities in each unit to develop disciplinary knowledge through relevant and thoughtful questions.  On-going quizzes allow teachers to assess how much knowledge children have learnt and remembered.
