Design and Technology
Our Philosophy
At Morton, it is our intent to teach children the knowledge and skills that they need to successfully design, make and evaluate products. We aim to engage and inspire them to be creative whilst fulfilling the specifications of a given design brief. We will provide opportunities to develop the practical skills of drawing, measuring, cutting, joining etc so that products are well made and successful.

How we teach DT
Design and Technology is embedded into our curriculum which is designed over a two-year cycle. Where there are meaningful links, DT links to the overall theme being taught. There are 5 different elements of DT that we teach – mechanisms, electrical systems, food technology, structures and textiles – children will experience all of these during the different cycles.
Design and technology is taught as a process rather than a standalone lesson. Children are taught the knowledge that they will need, they will practice a variety of skills and techniques before designing and making a product. Children will also learn how to evaluate their product against the brief or criteria that they were given. During food technology, children will learn about where food has come from as well as learning the skills of preparing snacks, drinks and meals.
