Physical Education
Our Philosophy
In the primary years, children are at a crucial stage of growth. PE supports the physical, social and emotional development of every child and it lays the foundation for lifelong well-being and helps every child thrive both inside and outside the classroom. We believe all pupils should have the opportunities to develop their confidence, competence and enthusiasm to participate in physical activities to establish and maintain an interest in regular physical activity as part of an active lifestyle. Children will be given the opportunity to practice their skills alone, in small groups and competitively. We believe that PE in primary school should be a safe, supportive, inclusive and fun environment where children discover the joy of movement and understand its importance, to carry their positive experiences into adulthood.
How we teach
We follow the Complete PE programme of learning, which ensures we get good coverage of the National Curriculum over a two-year cycle to fit with our mixed-aged classes. It also insures we are teaching our children a range of skills they can build on throughout their time at Morton. Teachers follow the sequence of lessons for a particular unit. Each lesson incorporates a warm-up, key skills practice, development of skills, a game situation or a choreographed element and a cool down. Each lesson builds on the previous one and gives the children an opportunity to recover the skills they have previously learnt. In addition, sports coaches from Bolsover District Council are funded using our Sports Premium funding to coach our children PE each half-term and support staff with continued professional development.
