Science

Our Philosophy

At Morton, we aim to develop pupils’ interest and enjoyment of science through the use of scientific questions, exploration and discovery.

Our science curriculum ensures that pupils have sufficient knowledge and vocabulary to understand both the uses and implications of science today and in the future. Throughout the programmes of study, the children will acquire and develop the key knowledge that has been identified within each unit and across each year group, as well as the application of scientific skills. We ensure that the Working Scientifically skills are built on and developed throughout children’s time at school so that they can apply their knowledge of science when using equipment, conducting experiments, building arguments and explaining concepts confidently and continue to ask questions and be curious about their surroundings.

How we teach

Science is taught using the ‘Developing Experts’ online learning scheme where adaptations are made where necessary.

The lessons give learners the chance to take part in a range of investigations using different scientific skills.

At the beginning of each lesson, there is an opportunity to retrieve prior knowledge from previous lessons or units. Each lesson has key vocabulary identified with a clear definition given. Scientific knowledge is shared with the pupils in the form of investigations, examples, presentations, diagrams, collected data, etc. Pupils have the opportunity to collect results, analyse and then draw conclusions. Class discussions are then held to close the lesson by identifying the knowledge and skills that have been learnt.
